Our Workroom

Made to Measure Curtains and Blinds in Newcastle

Made in our own workroom in Ponteland for homes across Newcastle and Northumberland, on their own or as part of a scheme we design.

Aubury & Co is an interior design studio in Ponteland, Northumberland, with its own workroom. It makes curtains, Roman blinds, pelmets, headboards, cushions and upholstered pieces to measure for homes in Newcastle upon Tyne, Ponteland and across Northumberland, whether you want curtains and blinds on their own or a whole room designed around them.

Having it in-house means the fabric on your windows, your bed and your sofa is chosen together and made to fit, so a room reads as one idea rather than a collection of purchases.

Every piece is measured for the window, the bed or the seat it will live on, and made for the room it belongs to. The studio has been in Ponteland since 2005, a few miles north-west of Newcastle city centre, so a curtain for a Newcastle or Northumberland house is made a short drive from where it will hang.

What the Workroom Makes

Four kinds of piece, each one made to the room rather than the nearest standard size.

Curtain detail in the guest bedroom, natural light filtered through a heavy weave

Curtains and Roman Blinds

Full-length curtains in a heavy weave, a Roman blind in a bay, a lighter cloth to soften a north-facing room. We choose the fabric with the rest of the scheme in mind, then make it to the window. In Newcastle's Victorian and Edwardian houses that means tall sashes and deep bays, in a city flat glass that is taller than it is wide, and in an older Northumberland house a deep stone reveal.

  • Curtains made to measure for each window
  • Roman blinds for bays, kitchens and smaller windows
  • Lining, heading and drop worked out for the fabric and the light
  • Cloth from the fabric houses on our Material Partners page

Pelmets

A pelmet finishes a window. At Springfield in Gosforth, Newcastle, Roman blinds and patterned pelmets dress the bay windows in a way that reads as tailoring rather than decoration, and the light is allowed to earn its place.

  • Pelmets made to the width of the window
  • Blind, pelmet and curtain planned together as one dressing
  • Pattern where it earns its place, plainness where it does not

Headboards

An upholstered headboard anchors a bedroom. At The Northumberland Project in Corbridge, a wenge framed headboard in velvet with fine thread detail was built in house and became the anchor for the room. At Elmfield Road an ikat headboard holds the master bedroom, and at Bamburgh a patterned headboard in mushroom and cream gives a guest bedroom its own character.

  • Upholstered and framed headboards made to the bed
  • Fabric matched to the curtains and cushions in the same room
  • Panelled, framed or plain, to suit the scheme

Cushions and Upholstered Pieces

The smaller pieces that settle a room. Cushions cut from the same cloth as the curtains, upholstered seating made to fit, the details that make a home feel collected over time rather than decorated in a weekend.

  • Cushions and lumbar pillows to the scheme
  • Upholstered seating and pieces made for the room
  • Textiles chosen for the way they age

Where the Workroom Sits in Our Process

1

Conversation

We listen to how you live, what you like and what the room is for. Windows, beds and seating are part of that first conversation, not an afterthought.

2

Concept

Curtains, blinds, headboards and cushions are chosen alongside paint, wallpaper and furniture, on the same mood board, so the fabric belongs to the room from the start.

3

Creation

The workroom makes each piece to measure while the rest of the scheme comes together, and it is fitted and styled as part of the final installation.

Common Questions

Can the workroom make curtains or blinds on their own?

Yes. The workroom makes curtains, Roman blinds and pelmets on their own, as well as for the schemes we design. We come to you, help you choose the cloth and make every piece for the window it will hang at. If you would like more than curtains, a room refresh is often the right size of project. Tell us about the window and we will suggest the simplest way to do it well.

Where are the pieces made?

In our own workroom in Ponteland, Northumberland, a few miles north-west of Newcastle city centre, where the studio has been based since 2005. The workroom pieces credited on our project pages, from Bamburgh to Gosforth to Corbridge, were made there.

Which fabrics do you use?

Our Material Partners page shows a select few of the fabric houses whose collections run through Aubury schemes most often. For each piece we choose the cloth with the rest of the room in mind, so the curtains, the bed and the seating are chosen together.

Do you make curtains and blinds for homes in Newcastle?

Yes. The workroom is in Ponteland, a few miles north-west of Newcastle city centre, and makes curtains, Roman blinds and pelmets to measure, on their own or as part of a scheme we design, for homes across the city from Gosforth and Jesmond to the Quayside, and in Ponteland, Darras Hall and the rest of Northumberland. Every curtain, pelmet, cushion and headboard in Montagu, Springfield and Sycamore, three whole homes in Gosforth, came from it. See interior design in Newcastle and where we work.

Can you make curtains and blinds for old or awkward windows?

Yes. Everything from the workroom is made to measure for each window, so an uneven reveal, a tall sash or a deep bay is simply part of the measurement. Our guides to Gosforth and Jesmond and Corbridge and the Tyne Valley show what those windows ask for.

Curtains or a Roman blind: which suits our window?

It depends on the window and the room. Where a thick wall gives a deep reveal, a Roman blind fitted inside it keeps the sill and the depth of the wall on show, while full-length curtains hung outside it make the window read taller and the room softer. In a bay, a Roman blind and a pelmet can be planned together as one dressing, as at Springfield in Gosforth. In a tall Newcastle room, curtains that stop short are the thing to avoid. We choose with the rest of the scheme in mind.

Do you come to the house?

For most projects, yes. We come to you, and every piece is measured for the window, the bed or the seat it will live on. Visits to the studio in Ponteland are by appointment.
